Finding Your [Original] Zen August 18, 2015

We’ve all heard about finding our zen; mediation, yoga, running along the lake front. For many people “vegging” out, or finding their center means working out, dancing, going to a Bikram class or taking a singing lesson. For others, going to church or another religious institution, therapy or sitting alone and drinking tea while reading works. All these conventional methods allow an individual to take time out of their day for their mental, emotional and spiritual health. Something different works for everyone but there are so many of us out there who are still trying to find their zen activity. Running is great, but maybe it’s more work than relaxing. Some people get intimidated in a Pilates class or at the gym. Spirituality is individual, but for many, going to a church or temple isn’t something that gives them inner peace. Sitting still is also very hard, and while it’s important and healthy to just be, it isn’t something that often comes easily. Finding your zen means finding something you enjoy that also relaxes you and gratifies your soul – meaning, sitting on the couch watching TV is out, no matter how much you are trying to convince me that it “makes you emotionally healthier.”

vintage-beauty-vanityThink about something you can do, a singular activity, that you can do without the need of other things. In example, maybe you love knitting, but you find that after ten minutes you get bored if you’re not watching a movie or TV re-runs. Find something that fulfills you on its own. Many people find cooking as a place of peace – it’s mentally interactive, focuses your attention on one thing, and it can be very cathartic. Most importantly, at the end of the process you are left with something beautiful, delicious and made from scratch! A zenful activity is one that satisfies, whether this means you have a finished end product or just a sense of accomplishment. (more…)

How has no one else ever thought of this?! It’s perfect for in the office, at the gym, or especially if you work from home and always forget to stay hydrated!

So logical! Most of all, you save the earth – no more toilet paper roll trash! I have also seen toilet paper roll tubes used to organize your dresser drawer (ladies). Roll your stockings or tights and then stick them in the tube, opening facing up, just like the box above. Then, when you are getting dressed you can easily see all your colors and it will keep them safe and snag free.

I did not think this would work. It totally worked! Of course, don’t turn the thing up full blast and leave the room, but for normal boiling (pasta, rice, potatoes) it works wonders! Wooden spoon salute!

Sleepless, stressed and most importantly sleepless. Did I mention sleepless? It’s the most agonizing thing almost anyone can go through. Just laying there, staring at the clock, thinking about how many hours you have left to potentially get some rest before you have to wake up? If you haven’t been there, you’re not human. Try this on for size! The 4-7-8 breathing trick! DLIH TESTED, DLIH APPROVED!

It’s not the easiest thing in the world, do not be fooled. Also, it may not knock you out in a 30 second flat like the article seems to claim, but what it will do is relax your body and get you into sleeping mode. Due to the concentration on breathing and counting, it will eliminate the chance of your mind wandering to things that you are stressed or worried about. If it doesn’t help you fall asleep right away, it will get you to Mr. Sandman time much faster!

Jan. 1st came and we made all these promises to ourselves; “I’ll workout more”, “I’ll eat less”, “I’ll get a solid eight hours of sleep”. Fast forward to March and most of those have gone out the window with the money we’re spending on a gym membership we’re not using. Life happens, and much of the time is also tramples over us like a heard of elephants. Spa Day Saturday! February 21, 2015

One of my personal projects the last several months has been leading a more fulfilling life. Ultimately, this is a dream that’s unattainable, since we know life will never be perfect, but I want to be healthy emotionally and mentally, not just physically, which means finding time to do things that make me feel happy, even if they are small. I would call taking care of myself a luxury, because for years I’ve been preaching about taking care of yourself, I’ve been told that I need to make me my number one priority, but when you’re hustling and just trying to get by, it falls to the bottom of the to-do list.

Being a girl is also part of allowing yourself to be special. Sometimes, being healthy just means watching 13 Going on 30 while doing your nails, and not having anyone need you, judge you, or annoy you. So, late last year I created Spa Day Saturday. “Saturday” can be a Friday, it can be a Monday morning, it can be a Thursday afternoon, it doesn’t matter when you do it, as long as you allow yourself to do it and not let anything stand in the way of that.

Every Saturday morning I wake up, I make a coffee and I watch TV on the coach for a few hours while cuddling with my cat. I might make breakfast, I might not, depends on what I feel like. The point of the morning is no stress, no drama, no worries. Then I give myself a full spa day! I take a long hot shower, and be sure to scrub with my Simple Sugars, double condition my hair (or treat it if I’m feeling really ambitious), take care of anything else in the shower including shaving, or really sudsing up just because it’s fun. I don’t put myself on a timeline or try to be out by a certain time. I’ll also do my eyebrows this day, make sure they’re perfect, and do any face treatments that I have lying around. At some point I’ll also do my oil pulling (coconut oil! woot! woot!); typically I’ll do it while in the shower, but I’ll sometimes move it to after if I’m just not in the mood yet. I always feel super clean and invigorated after spa day, not only because it’s fun, and something to look forward to, but because it gets me ready for the week ahead with healthy, shining skin, hair, nails etc.

For fun twists – I’ll sometimes turn on music depending on my mood, or I may relocate to a different bathroom which gives it a super spa feel, since it’s not my day-to-day shower location. This is also a super fun time to use any samples you may have gotten from Sephora, friends, BrichBox etc. the most important thing to making spa day work is that you actually do it, I’m fortunate that I have Saturday mornings to myself, but on the off chance I don’t, or I have to move it to a different day due to scheduling, I make it clear that I am not to be bothered for a while, it’s my time to relax and beautify!

Why You Need a Vacation February 13, 2015

Vacation; it’s something we can do without. It’s a luxury. It’s a self-indulgence. So, if we don’t take one for a couple of years, we’ll be fine. After all, that money should be going towards our savings, our student loans, our car payments, or just under our mattress for a rainy day, right? Wrong. Here’s why you should take a vacation at least once a year, and how to do it.

Science has shown that in men, a risk of a heart attack increases by 30% if they opt out of a vacation, that number increases to 50% in women. We hear that and we think, okay, that’s something I’ll worry about when I’m 40 and by then, I’ll have the finances to take a vacation annually…but what if you won’t? Will that be the never-ending excuse? Statistics also tell us that, not only do American’s receive less vacation days than most employees of other countries, but fewer and fewer Americans are using all their days. Perhaps there’s a feeling of guilt, being away from the job, perhaps our employers put that pressure on us, that idea that every e-mail needs to be answered, every phone call needs to be returned and there’s no good reason to abandon clients for a week while you’re sipping on mai-tais in the Bahamas. Just like a sprained ankle needs rest and healing, your mind and spirit need quiet time too. Today, it seems like you’re invincible, perfect skin, flawless hair, a work ethic for days and the energy of a small child but the truth is, if we don’t take a break every now and then we’re going to spiral out of control and soon that super hero ability will turn into exhaustion.

How to Be a Morning Person February 10, 2015

“For many of us, mornings begin in a rushed panic. We allow our alarm clocks to buzz at least a dozen times before we decide we have to get out of bed. We then rush around our homes half-awake trying to get ready for our day. In a hurry, we stub our toe on the bedpost, forget to put on deodorant, and don’t pack a lunch because we simply do not have time.

It’s no wonder that so many folks despise the thought of being awake before 9 am!”

Forgetting deodorant? Check! Not packing lunch? Also check! Stubbing toe? Been there! Learn how to be a morning person, or at least a little bit happier in the AM! Read this awesome and uplifting article at MindBodyGreen!

New Favorite Snack ALERT! January 27, 2015

On the rare, (or at times, not so rare) occasion, when hunger strikes but there’s nothing yummy in the fridge, I’ve turned to a snack that’s both exceptionally delicious and nutritious! My latest favorite in-between-meal-craze has become Granny Smith Apples and Blue Cheese.

In my opinion, the fresher the better, so I always buy organic apples and I’m a huge fan of Marzetti blue cheese dressing. It’s a higher quality than something that comes out of a bottle or arrives with your hot wings. It has a great balance of chunky blue cheese pieces to creamy dressing, so it’s ideal for dipping (I also use it for carrots…or really anything. I’d probably drink the stuff if I could).

20141227_162536I cut my apple into quarters, and then slice those up into thirds or quarters again. Pour some dressing into a shallow little bowl and I’m all set. The best part is I’ll often eat the apple right off of the cutting board, so it’s fast to make and easy to clean up! The sweet, sour apple plus the saltiness and creaminess of the blue cheese makes it an awesome sweet/savory!

I usually pair it with a green tea, which is my next big dietary fan favorite. I’ve always had green tea but just lately realized it has properties of relaxation – Livestrong posts a great article explaining the hows and whys

…and before you go worrying about the caffeine, we’re way ahead of you! Green tea has significantly less caffeine than a cup of coffee or a glass of soda (Mayo Clinic, ya’ll!)

I’ll typically have a mug right before bed, Chamomile tea gives me a “pollen allergy” like reaction, so green tea has provided an awesome alternative. Not to mention, it has so many other life long health properties. I’ll drink any green tea, pretty much, but I especially like those with jasmine in them.

So, if you have the munchies but you’re trying to cut back on the Fritos try this, or your own version of it! Yum!
